What Is Rebar? Types, Standards, and the Role of Ferroalloys in Alloy Rebar Production

Introduction

Rebar (Reinforcing Bar) is the most widely used steel product in the construction industry. In every reinforced concrete structure—from residential building foundations to bridges, dams, and tunnels—rebar plays the primary role in carrying tensile forces that concrete alone cannot withstand.

But rebar is not simply a piece of steel. The precise chemical composition of the steel, the type of ferroalloys used, and the rolling process directly affect strength, ductility, and structural safety. As a supplier of steelmaking raw materials, Nik Arad plays a key role in this supply chain.

What Is Rebar?

Rebar is a steel bar that usually has a ribbed or deformed surface to provide better bonding with concrete. Rebar diameters typically range from 6 mm to 40 mm and above.

Two main types of rebar:

  • Plain Rebar: Smooth surface, more flexible, used for stirrups and similar applications
  • Deformed Rebar: Ribbed surface, higher strength, used as the main reinforcement in structures

Rebar Standards

Rebar is produced according to different standards around the world. The most important include:

European Standard EN 10080

Under this standard, rebar grades are identified by the letter B, referring to bars, followed by a number indicating yield strength:

Grade Yield Strength (MPa) Elongation at Break Application
B400 Minimum 400 Minimum 14% Light structures
B500A Minimum 500 Minimum 5% Conventional structures
B500B Minimum 500 Minimum 8% Conventional structures
B500C Minimum 500 Minimum 12% Seismic regions

B500C is the most advanced grade and is required in seismic regions such as Iran. This grade combines high strength of 500 MPa with sufficient ductility to absorb earthquake energy.

Iranian Standard (ISIRI 3132)

Iran’s national rebar standard is based on EN 10080. A1, A2, A3, and A4 rebars are approximate equivalents of European grades. A3 (340/500) is the most commonly used rebar grade in Iran.

The Role of Ferroalloys in Rebar Production

This is where the direct connection with Nik Arad’s products becomes clear. Producing B500C rebar requires the proper selection and use of ferroalloys.

Ferromanganese — The Foundation of Every Rebar Grade

High-carbon ferromanganese (HC FeMn) is added to virtually every rebar steel heat in order to:

  • Remove oxygen from molten steel
  • Bind sulfur in the form of harmless MnS
  • Add approximately 0.5–1.5% manganese to the steel composition

Without ferromanganese, producing high-quality rebar is not possible.

Ferrovanadium — The Key to B500C

To achieve a yield strength of 500 MPa in B500C rebar, adding approximately 0.06–0.15% vanadium through ferrovanadium is one of the most common methods. Vanadium increases strength through precipitation strengthening and grain refinement without significantly reducing ductility or elongation.

The advantage of vanadium over other strengthening methods, such as increasing carbon content, is that rebar weldability can be maintained. High-carbon rebar has poor weldability, which can create problems in construction applications.

Ferrotitanium — Improving Toughness

Ferrotitanium is often used alongside ferrovanadium in B500C rebar. Titanium refines austenite grains and improves rebar toughness—the ability to absorb energy before fracture—which is particularly important under seismic loading.

Ferrosilicon — Supplementary Deoxidation

Ferrosilicon is also used as a deoxidizer alongside ferromanganese. Silicon and manganese together create a more effective deoxidation system than either element used alone.

Rebar Production Process

Rebar is typically produced from steel billets, which are themselves manufactured by melting steel scrap in an electric arc furnace (EAF):

1. Scrap Melting in the EAF: Steel scrap is melted, the chemical composition is adjusted, and ferroalloys are added.

2. Continuous Casting: Molten steel is continuously cast into billets, typically with cross-sections of 120×120 mm or 150×150 mm.

3. Hot Rolling: The billets are rolled at temperatures of approximately 1100–1200°C into rebar with the required diameter and rib pattern.

4. Controlled Cooling: Cooling rate directly affects the final properties of the rebar. Some mills use the Tempcore process for surface hardening and controlled mechanical properties.

Why Does Ferroalloy Quality Matter in Rebar Production?

In rebar production, any deviation from the target chemical composition can create serious problems:

  • Vanadium below target: Yield strength may not reach 500 MPa → the rebar may fail to meet B500C requirements
  • Manganese above the specified limit: Weldability may decrease
  • High sulfur in ferromanganese: Rebar surface quality may deteriorate
  • Inaccurate ferrovanadium analysis: Melt charge calculations may become incorrect

For this reason, purchasing ferroalloys with a valid chemical analysis certificate or Mill Certificate is essential for rebar manufacturers.

Rebar Price and Its Relationship with Ferroalloy Prices

Rebar prices depend on crude steel prices, scrap costs, energy costs, and ferroalloy prices. Although ferrovanadium is used in relatively small quantities—around 0.1%—its high price means it can represent a noticeable share of B500C production costs.

Fluctuations in FeV80 prices can therefore directly influence a steel mill’s decision to use vanadium or alternative strengthening methods.

Nik Arad and the Rebar Supply Chain

Nik Arad supplies ferroalloy raw materials to rebar manufacturers, including:

  • High-carbon ferromanganese for deoxidation and sulfur control
  • Ferrovanadium (FeV50, FeV80) for achieving B500C strength
  • Ferrotitanium (FeTi70) for grain refinement and toughness improvement

All products are supplied with guaranteed chemical analysis and Mill Certificates.

Conclusion

Rebar may appear to be one of the simplest steel products, but behind every high-quality B500C rebar lies the careful selection of ferroalloys, precise chemical composition control, and reliable sourcing of raw materials.

Nik Arad supports this supply chain by providing the required ferroalloys with guaranteed quality and certified chemical analysis.
